To shed some light on the canon, Kanata is one of many students met by the player character after enrolling to Yumenosaki Academy- a school built for the purpose of raising idols. Previously an all-male campus, the player character is the first female to attend and take up the role of Producer, where she assists idols with their work, Kanata and his unit included. Through the stories I've linked above, you can see Kanata's full in-game history both with the main character and other students of the school throughout the year.
As for what isn't properly mentioned through linear storytelling, Kanata's personal history prior to attending Yumenosaki is that of an estranged child belonging to an overprotective, restrictive family. It's dropped across multiple conversations that his family is disapproving of his enrollment to the school and that he's bargained with them in order to continue attending. While not much is known about the full situation, it has been made clear that he is regarded as a 'living god' (lit. ikigami) with a full set of devoted followers, hence his parent's overprotective ways. Since birth, the atmosphere in his home has been unnatural and he has been treated as something "otherly", prompting him to resent his home and want to separate his identity from his family completely.
He's essentially a watered down idol version of The Little Mermaid ft. vague religion bullshit that's yet to be expanded on, but if there's anything for his history you'd like me to write more about, please let me know!

Personality:Coined as one of the five 'Oddballs' of Yumenosaki, Kanata fits the description perhaps more than anyone else. He's someone who seems aloof at worst and eccentric at best, preferring to take things at his own easy pace rather than restricting himself. 'Slow and steady' is a motto he lives by and enforces on others who seem to be drawn in by his easygoing aura. The oppressive life forced upon him by his family makes Kanata hate feeling stifled and restricted, and it's like this that he abuses the freedom outside his home to do what he wants. It's noted that the faculty of the school keeps a keen and disapproving eye on his habits; he skips class regularly to soak in the school fountain, sets up elaborate aquarium exhibits in his club room with his own funds, and is all around hard to approach or converse with due to his strange mannerisms and slow, airy speech. Even when his behavior is criticized by someone, he thanks them for the reminder yet goes right back to doing as he pleases. That's not to say it's impossible to befriend him, of course-- he's by no means unfriendly, but rather seems to put people off on account of all his quirks most of the time.
Of all these quirks, his fixation with the ocean would be the most noticeable. He's president of the Marine Biology Club, soaks in water whenever he gets a chance, makes stuffed animals of saltwater creatures.. and that's just scraping the surface. He all but gives the impression of having come from the ocean itself, bearing qualities of being the perfect balance of gentle and cruel, his floaty demeanor not always jiving with the sharpness or morbidity of his words and actions. He's submerged an underclassman underwater as 'punishment', serenely mentioned 'drowned bodies' being part of his lineup of friends, and even offhandedly mentioned 'killing off' half the Marine Biology Club's collection of fish to make taking care of them easier for the next club president, all with his usual spaciness. It's later learned that due to his family's connection with the ocean, Kanata's fascination is not exactly an over-obsessive interest, but rather a torch passed onto him that he adores wholeheartedly. Initially, nothing else he speaks of shares the same passion and fondness of he exclaims for the ocean, stating it to be the mother of everything. There's even a hint of wistful longing in his words that he would rather be claimed by the sea than to be subjected to the troubles of the 'land', but he fully acknowledges that the sea is also frightening in its mystery and depth, struggling with but ultimately keeping his decision to not let himself sink in its hold.
Sadly, or perhaps ironically, he cannot swim, but eagerly tries to spread the word of how charming fish can be (especially the particularly ugly or scary ones) by giving away his handmade stuffed animals to others in the school when they've been agreeable in his eyes. A friend of the ocean is a friend of Kanata, after all, and friends are something he seems to crave more of as the year progresses.
Against his eccentricities, a deeper part of Kanata is someone who hates loneliness, using his stuffed animals and "sea friends" in his aquariums to stave off the worst of these feelings. From his upbringing, he has a difficult time understanding others and is very distant at the start of the year, even finding it too troublesome to look after and guide the first years of his unit on his own prior to their very first performance, and assumes that he'd be unwanted there. Paired with his personal oddities and having been ostracized the year before during the school's 'revolution', Kanata carries the reputation of being a solitary monster that's impossible to understand. In truth, he was chosen as one of five other 'oddballs', targeted specifically for standing out as genius talent, and later 'slayed' for the sake of Eichi Tenshouin's reformation of the school. Incomprehensible he may be, but Kanata is very much human, and expresses that those times were painful and strange, even describing that time of his life as being like a long, drawn out play. While there's no sign of the same trauma the other oddballs share, as Kanata himself is keen to let that pain go, there is an underlying tension in his smile when he speaks with the one who was cruel to him and his friends. The oddballs are a bond forged through fire that he cherishes even as they continue to stray and grow in separate directions after Eichi's reign reaches its end- he is happy to see them make new bonds and experiences, finding peace in the new era of the school.
As for Kanata himself, he finds an eventual belonging in his unit, RYUSEITAI; a colorful, chaotic, late-blooming flower full of personalities that would otherwise have nothing to do with each other, and comes to call it his family. Having been without a unit before, his reason for joining is initially just to keep a promise made early on to their unit leader, Chiaki Morisawa, that he would protect his 'wish'- and it's something Kanata sees through to the end of the year, protective especially of this bond and of Chiaki himself. The juniors of their unit come to be called the 'children', and Kanata keeps a protective hold on them as well, no longer worrying about hindering them, but instead being another person to support and encourage their growth. He offers words of comfort and guidance, hard to understand as they may be, and even visits the beach to watch the sea with them when times are particularly stressful. In the midst of Repayment Festival, where their juniors are meant to operate by themselves, a fight breaks out between the first years that Chiaki is quick to want to help resolve, but Kanata holds him back knowing they won't be able to stand on their own if they try to fix everything for them.
In his club, too, a different sense of belonging unfolds that also help him reach an understanding that it's become much easier to 'live on the land', where he had struggled to do so in the past. Sharing the things he loves with people who also love them, Kanata's incomprehensible ways seem more like endearing quirks rather than qualities to be feared, and he's humanized once again.
Of the friends he makes, Kanata becomes a soothing presence and someone level-headed, appropriate for his position of Vice Captain of their unit and balancing the intense energy of their leader. If Chiaki is the blazing sun in the sky, then Kanata is the vast ocean meeting him at the horizon. Beneath all that enigmatic mystery is the human many students couldn't recognize in the past. He's someone playful, helpful, and sincere, even if he may still seem hard to understand. While he doesn't view himself as a hero despite being in a hero-themed unit, even stating he sympathizes more with the monsters in tokusatsu, Kanata acts the part more than he may seem to realize. Time and again, he proves himself adept at reading those around him and questioning if they're alright or even pointing out that they seem to have been crying, then taking the time to hear them out and helping if it's possible, be it with advice or simply telling them they're being silly. For Kaoru Hakaze, another member of his club, Kanata spends so much time chiseling away at his problems and anxieties that by RepaymentFes, he confesses that both the player character and Kanata are the only people who can soothe him as opposed to his bad habit of being a flirty playboy before, a drastic change compared to their first interaction of not even wanting to hang around alone with Kanata at the start of the year.
Truthfully, the shroud of mystery is a way of separating himself from his home life, not wanting such a burden to tarnish the sparkle of everything he's come to care for, even stating that he simply wishes everyone would forget about his connection to his family entirely. This issue crops up time and again when he skips out on school and distances himself to the point of worrying those around him. He doesn't want them to feel like they should be troubled and carrying the weight of knowing about the fate he has within his family's hold- Chiaki especially he keeps this from, as it would only cause him pain to struggle for a solution to a problem only Kanata can face. In fact, Kanata becomes annoyed when others try to pry into his situation; he even gets downright angry when his childhood friend, Madara, sticks his nose into getting Kanata out of being punished after he had begged for his family not to sell the city aquarium they own, for fear of the next people to take it over mistreating the creatures. Remember that Kanata is not one to really become so worked up about anything else, but he'd been so willing to handle the problem on his own that Madara mediating it without his permission, let alone getting his club members and Chiaki involved, made Kanata perhaps the most angry he's ever been in the story thus far. It takes some scolding from Kaoru for Kanata to realize he has been selfish in keeping secrets under the good intention of not causing problems that he'd become troublesome for them. By the end of this dispute, however, Kanata even acknowledges that he'll have to share his past someday, hoping that he'll still be loved and even saved if it needed.
Though he does not consider himself a 'hero' in a superhero unit, and though he faces a future that's uncertain due to the restrictions of his home, he's happy to have held a moment in which he could be with those he's befriended across his final year at Yumenosaki, even thanking Eichi for granting such a sparkling youth to him after the pain he underwent being 'sacrificed' for that dream. The distant and incomprehensible creature from the sea finds the worth in staying on land, and it's obvious that he's been a cheerful, friendly, and very human person all along.
It's also mentioned in the Aquarium event that he and his ancestors can communicate with sea creatures, but since I don't know to what extent, I won't be making use of this ability until I know what the hell all that is about via canon update.

Abilities:
Given that he's an idol, Kanata's stamina and all around health is in good shape. It's noted that he's stronger than he looks, as he has been shown to carry large aquatic tanks all by himself and that his special skill is a 'karate chop', but other than that he's just a regular human! He does claim to "shrivel" up and become tired if he doesn't take in water, though. It's also mentioned in the Aquarium event that he and his ancestors can communicate with sea creatures, but since I don't know to what extent, I won't be making use of this ability until I know what the hell all that is about via canon update.
Inventory:
- Smartphone ( water damaged; useless )
- Wallet ( contains ¥2000, school ID, x4 admission tickets to an aquarium; all useless )
- Handmade stuffed animal ( has no use, but it sure is cute despite the water damage! )
